In May of 1865, toward the beginning of Henry Berry Lowery’s reign of terror in Robeson County, Harriet McKay had just given birth to her tenth and last child, Mary Emma. Still in bed after the birth, Harriett’s rest was disturbed by the presence of Lowery himself, who had decided to sit and wait for her teenaged son, Frank, who had helped in the apprehension of one of Lowery’s cohorts, Henderson Oxendine. While Lowery waited, he rocked little Mary Emma in her cradle. Frank never appeared. -DPE & SCE

  106. Daniel McNeill b 5 July 1805 d 3 Sept 1872
This is "Daniel McNeill of Richland Swamp" (found in Robeson Co. records variously as "Daniel McNeill R.S." and "Daniel McNeill (Richland)"), and from extant deeds dating to the 1790s, it is now known that Daniel's parents were "John McNeill of Richland Swamp" (as it appears in a deed) and his wife Flora McMillan. This John McNeill owned several tracts of land on the north edge of Richland Swamp (also called Solomans Swamp and Scolding Branch in early deeds) near Moody Bay and what was McDugald Branch (Archibald McDugald's branch). Some of John McNeill's property was eventually sold to Alexander McPherson in 1851. "Daniel McNeill of Richland Swamp" married Sarah Black in 1839, as is proved by recently discovered Black family Bible records in the possession of Liz Frano of Indiana. Sarah Black was his only wife and after her death in 1843 he never remarried. These Black family bible records also show an Archibald McNeill who died in 1835 (this was Daniel's older brother according to Robeson deeds) and a Flora McNeill adjacent to his name who died in 1838 (Daniel's mother). Daniel and Sarah Black McNeill had only two children, Angus Archibald ("Angus Archie", see #105 above) McNeill and Catherine "Kate" McNeill (see #168) who married Paisley Smith. Sarah Black McNeill died in 1843, about three months after Angus Archie's birth, and was the daughter of Angus Black and Margaret (née Black) Black. Margaret Black Black was the daughter of Archibald and Margaret Black of Cumberland County, NC, both of whom moved to Gadsden County, Florida in the 1830's. According to Henry Hodgin of Red Springs, Daniel McNeill of Richland Swamp was the 'brother' of John McNeill of Keinfordale who was husband of Margaret McMillan (John and Margaret are buried on his farm about a mile west of Philadelphus Church cemetery). Henry was correct but Daniel was a half-brother, as evidence shows their father John married twice, because four of his sons – Neill, Archibald, John and Malcolm – were buying land in Bladen/Robeson around Richland Swamp in the 1780s and 1790s. John's later children by Flora McMillan were born from 1794 to about 1812.

  291. Henry H. Kelly [CSA] b 14 Apr 1841 d 10 Dec 1898
C.S.A. - 36th NC Regiment. (Following copied from The Fayetteville Observer, 16 Mar 1979, 'Cape Fear Country' by Dick Brown: 'Harrison Muse of Laurinburg concerning his grandfather, Henry Harrison Kelly of Bladen County, who was a Bentonville Battle casualty: ‘He was wounded there,’ Muse said, ‘and was left on the battlefield for three days before receiving medical treatment. As a result he was left with a stiff leg and walked with a pronounced limp the remainder of his life.’ Kelly, a private from Bladen County, had been a farmer before joining the Confederate Army in the early days of the war. He later left his home along the Cape Fear River in the Kelly community and settled at Philadelphus in Robeson County. ‘From what I was told,’ Muse said, ‘grandfather Kelly was stationed at Fort Fisher as the war neared an end. He managed to escape from there just before the final surrender in February (1865), and made his way up the Cape Fear River to join the Confederates in the Fayetteville area. ‘He had just made contact with General Johnston’s army when the fighting began at Bentonville. He had become a member of the 36th NC Regiment, which included the Bladen Stars, and took part in the early charge led by Lt. Col. Taylor. 'He was wounded in the leg during this charge, which wiped out over half the regiment, and lay helpless for three days before getting any attention. I guess they were lucky even to save his leg, but he was permanently crippled.' Kelly, who became a wheelwright after moving to Philadelphus, died around 1898. His daughter, Jennie, the only one of six children to reach adulthood, took a secretarial job in Laurinburg after completing business school at Spartanburg, S.C. There she later met and married C.E. Muse. ‘One of the last trips she made before her death,’ her son said, ‘was to the Bentonville battleground. It was her first time there and she was extremely interested to get a chance to see the place where her father had fought his last battle.’' –DE)

  331. Catherine McNeill In Memory of Catherine McNeill Died Oct 1865 by Kate E. McNeill Smith.
In the Philadelphus Church Records, Book I, it's found that Catherine died 8 Oct 1865 and says, "Aged. A pious lady." Catherine was the daughter of John McNeill of Richland Swamp and wife Flora McMillan, and a sibling of Neill McNeill who married Sarah McBryde and of Daniel McNeill of Richland Swamp. It's long been thought this was the grave of Catherine McNeill, a sister of "Sailor Hector" McNeill who died unmarried, but that is in error. The grave's inscription states it was erected by Kate E. McNeill Smith – daughter of Daniel McNeill of Richland Swamp (1805-1872, see grave #106 above) – who was Catherine's niece whom she named in her will as "Catharine E. Smith". In addition, comparing original Robeson County deeds and records it has been shown that this Catherine is the sister of Daniel McNeill of Richland Swamp (found in Robeson Co. records variously as "Daniel McNeill R.S." and "Daniel McNeill (Richland)"), son of John McNeill of Richland Swamp and 2nd wife Flora McMillan. –SE.
