The list above was found in a trunk which belonged to my great-grandmother, Ann McPherson McKay. Some listed may have slaves, or they may have been sharecroppers who lived on the Duncan McKay farm after the Civil War. Israel, for example, belonged to a nearby McNeill family. "Speckle" Peter was a slave of the Duncan McKay family as was "Old Aunt Mary," Ailse and Hector. Hector was a highly skilled slave and a court case between Duncan McKay and his relatives in Georgia revolved around his value in the 1860s. Ailse is believed to have been Peter's daughter and she was born about 1835 [dated slave deeds show their ages]. It is believed that Diane was Ailse's daughter. Diane, born very close to 1865, was the ancestress of the Willie B. Smith family of Wagram, NC. It is not known who Beck Campbell was.
