Notes: This James McNeill is surrounded by much lore, including the legend that he was stranded on an island in Canada when his ship foundered and that his wife had remarried by the time he was rescued. James was a schoolmaster and was an official (noted as James McNeill, Esq. in the minutes) of the Robeson county court in the 1810s, often presiding with one or two other influential gentlemen over court sessions. He married four times, once in Canada, then in Robeson to Elizabeth McNeill who bore him several children. His third wife was the widow Mrs. Sarah Matthews Patterson who bore him two children. He moved to Alachua County, Florida with his fourth wife Mary Banter McNeill who outlived him. More research is needed to verify the information about this family of McNeills.
