Here, 'JE' is referring to Catherine McNeill, daughter of Alexander and Mary "Polly" McEachern McNeill, who married Archibald Campbell of Dundarack, now in Hoke County. Archibald Campbell's wife Catherine was alive in 1885, so, unless the inscription on the stone was misrecorded, the woman buried here was not the wife of Archibald Campbell. -SCE]

  20. 'Blackfork McKay' cemetery located about a mile and a half north of Red Springs, NC, on the east side of highway 71, just north and on lands adjacent to the Raft Swamp which intersects hwy 71. This cemetery is known to have existed during the late 1880s. Later, during the twentieth century, the elderly children of James Franklin McKay (grandson of Daniel and Nancy McMillan McKay, listed below) recalled 'playing among the tombstones' of this cemetery as youngsters while living there. In 1889, J.F. McKay moved a mile or so south of Red Springs to Philadelphus, and at some time thereabout, sold the property with the cemetery on it. The new owner 'pulled up the tombstones, threw them into the woods, and plowed over the graves.' This property was listed as 400 acres belonging to Dugald McKay (see below) in an 1801 list of Robeson county landowners (NC State Archives and History), and was in the 'Blackfork,' or 'the Fork,' the fork of the Little Raft Swamp and Big Raft Swamp. The following are the ancestors of the J.F. McKay family of the Philadelphus community below Red Springs, and were most probably buried in this cemetery:
    1. Dugald McKay, born c.1750 in Scotland, died 1801 - 1810 in Robeson county. He may have been related to Daniel McKay who died in Robeson county in 1818, leaving a wife, Isabella, and several children.
    2. Mary McKay, wife of Dugald McKay, born c.1760 in Scotland, died c.1845 in Robeson county.
    3. Hugh McKay, son of Dugald and Mary McKay, born c.1783 in Scotland, died (intestate) October1843 in Robeson county. Unmarried.
    4. Daniel McKay, son of Dugald and Mary McKay, husband of Nancy McMillan, born c.1786 in Scotland, died Oct 19, 1819 in Robeson county. Nancy was buried on her mother's farm at Philadelphus, the farm it is believed she moved to following Daniel's death in 1819.
    5. Christian McKay Galbreath, daughter of Dugald and Mary McKay, born c.1788 in Scotland, died 1859 in Robeson county. Married to Daniel Galbreath, no children.
    6. Jennett McKay, daughter of Dugald and Mary McKay, born c.1795 in Robeson county, died 1859 in Robeson county. Unmarried.
    7. Mary B. ‘Polly’ McKay, daughter of Dugald and Mary McKay, born c.1799 in Robeson county, died after 1843 in Robeson county. Unmarried.
    8. Daniel Galbreath, husband of Christian McKay Galbreath, born ?, died before 1821.
    9. Archibald McKay, son of Daniel and Nancy McMillan McKay, born 1817 in Robeson county, died 1846 in Robeson county. Killed by a runaway horse. Unmarried.
    10. John McKay, son of Daniel and Nancy McMillan McKay, born c.1815 in Robeson county, died probably before 1840, or went west.
(Other families close to the McKays socially and geographically may have been buried in this cemetery, such as Dallases, Hendersons, Browns, Galbreaths, or McMillans)

  21. Philadelphus McKay cemetery located on the W.D. McKay, Jr., farm [now the Laura Jones farm], about one-half mile from the intersection of Hwys. 71 & 72 on the south side of Hwy. 72. It can be seen approximately fifty yards into a field from that highway, visable as a clump of brush in the middle of a small field.
This cemetery is of various McKay/McMillan family members and their slaves. It is not known how old this cemetery is; it could be as old as the late 1700's. Duncan McKay's home, built from the old Philadelphus Presbyterian Church building torn down just after 1862, stood some seventy-five yards away from this cemetery. The graves are still evident as a half dozen or so remaining depressions in the ground, and none are marked. James Franklin McKay, whose home stands across Hwy. 72 from this cemetery and who died in 1941, maintained that his grandmother, Nancy McMillan McKay, had been buried there many years after her young daughter, Mary, had been buried there. He placed pine knots at graves in this burial ground throughout his life to keep them marked. At this writing, no pine knots are evident.
This W.D. McKay farm is part of a large 18th century tract granted to a Patrick Mearing who sold it to a British Colonel Archibald Taylor in 1784. Taylor's land was confiscated following the Revolution. The tract was then divided and sold to various individuals, and it is believed that Finlah McCorvey bought into this division, his purchase including the land the McKays came to own. Two of McCorvey's sons, Edward and John, later sold 210 acres of their father's purchase in 1812 to the widow Effy McMillan from Bladen county. Effy's daughter, Nancy McMillan (grandmother of J.F. McKay and buried in the cemetery), married Daniel McKay, son of Dugald McKay of Blackfork, thus the relationship to the Blackfork McKays.)
Those known to have been buried in this cemetery will not have a question mark after their names:
    1. Effie McMillan?, born in Scotland c. 1765, wife of Duncan McMillan (buried in Bladen county?), mother of Nancy McMillan McKay. Death date unknown, but died after 1812 and before 1837.
    2. Mary McKay, daughter of Daniel and Nancy McKay. Born c. 1815, died probably before 1820, as she is not listed in the 1820 census under Daniel McKay's name.
    3. Nancy McMillan McKay, born c.1790 in Scotland, arrived in America with her parents in 1792, died 1863 at the home of her son, Duncan McKay, nearby. Wife of Daniel McKay of Blackfork.
    4. Dougald McKay, son of Daniel and Nancy McKay, born 1819 at the Fork, and died in 1865. Lived in the old McKay cabin about 150 yards north of this cemetery on the rise of a bay.
    5. Margaret McMillan, dates unknown, 'grandmother of Austin Smith' and possibly a relative of Nancy McMillan. She died at Duncan McKay's home while visiting there.
    6. Ailse?, a slave, born about 1835, died about 1880-90. Believed to be dau of 'Speckled Peter.' Deeded to Duncan McKay from his aunts at Blackfork in 1851.
    7. 'Speckled' Peter?, a slave, born about 1805, died about 1880-90. Deeded to Duncan McKay from his aunts at Blackfork in 1851.
    8. Mary?, a slave [Peter's wife?], died about 1880-90.

    1. Neill T. (Tailor) McNeill D. 27 Nov 1881 Aged 93 years Who was a soldier in the War of 1812 [Neill T. McNeill was a son of Neill and Flora McNeill, the "forgotten generation". Neill was a son of "Shoemaker John" McNeill and Mary Peterson McNeill. Neill died in 1831 and his will of that year listed all his children which included Archibald P. McNeill, William Peterson McNeill, Rosa the wife of Richard Gregory, Mary the wife of Neill B. Brown, and others. William Peterson McNeill was the youngest brother of Neill T. McNeill. Neill and Flora McNeill were the parents of Neill T. McNeill and all his siblings; yet, somehow, Neill and Flora were forgotten, though they live on in Robeson County deeds and records. A study of the land records of the family and the remnants of the estate settlement papers of Neill and his son Malcolm reveal all of this.]

  38. Neill McEachern cemetery, found mentioned on a typed piece of paper from my brother's collection entitled "Additional McEachern History". It appears to be a photocopy without an author's name but stamped with the date 'Aug 25 1940'. Handwritten addenda on the page are in Henry H. Hodgin's handwriting. The first three paragraphs contain info about the ancient clan of McEachern, but the fourth paragraph begins with:
"From this ancient family there migrated to the U.S.A. in 1793, one Neill McEachern, who was born in 1743 in Scotland. He settled in St. Pauls township (in Robeson County), North Carolina. He brought with him a large family, including six sons and several daughters. The sons were: Peter, John, Daniel, Duncan, Archie, and Hugh. Of these, Peter, John, Duncan, and Archie [here, the confusing handwritten note seems to state that Archie married Annie McGeachey daughter of John Daniel McGeachey and who was a sister of Daniel Pat the Preacher who lived in GA, and the couple lived at Little Desert in Robeson, and 1st cousins of Miss Katie McInnis Buie] settled in South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas. Of the six sons, Hugh only remained in North Carolina all his life. A great grandson, Duncan C. McEachern, still owns the old farm. He lives in St. Pauls, North Carolina. In the old family cemetery on the farm were Neill McEachern lived, are a number of graves with wooden markers. Among the are:
    1. Neill McEachern, a native of Scotland. Died Oct. 1, 1816. Age 73 years.
    2. Mary Shaw, consort of Neill McEachern, died Oct. 30, 1816. Age 43 years. (She evidently was his second wife)
    3. Daniel McEachern, son of Neill McEachern, died July 14, 1817
    4. Sarah McEachern, daughter of Neill McEachern, died Aug. 9, 1817. Age 12.
    5. Malcolm McEachern, son of Neill McEachern, died Aug. 1, 1817. (I understand that several of these died with typhoid fever.)
